Write one clear question

Open the Yes or No Wheel and state the decision in a form that can be answered with yes or no. “Should we watch a movie tonight?” is clearer than “What should we do?” If the real choice has three or more options, use a Decision Wheel instead.

Avoid combining several decisions in one question. “Should we order pizza and invite friends?” contains two choices that may need different answers. Split it into separate questions or list the complete options directly.

Good uses for a yes or no wheel

Use it for questions such as:

  • Should the class review one extra example?
  • Should we choose takeout from the shortlist?
  • Should this optional activity be included?

The same two-choice format can compare “Option A” and “Option B,” “Now” and “Later,” or two specific activities. Clear labels are better than forcing every binary choice into yes and no. Review both entries before spinning so the visible result matches the question.

Know when not to randomize

Do not use a random answer for medical, legal, financial, safety, consent, or other high-impact decisions. Those choices require reliable information, responsible judgment, and sometimes professional advice. A wheel also should not override another person's boundaries or decide something on their behalf.

For work and school, avoid using a yes or no result as evidence that a plan is fair or correct. It can break a tie between acceptable options, but it cannot assess consequences.

Notice your reaction to the result

Sometimes the value of the spin is the reaction it reveals. If the wheel says no and you immediately wish it had said yes, you may already have a preference. You can treat that reaction as information rather than repeatedly spinning until a preferred answer appears.

Use more options when the question needs them
